5th November • Remember, remember the 5th of November • Gunpowder, treason and plot • I know of no reason • Why gunpowder and treason should ever be forgot!
Why do we celebrate? In 1605 a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the King James I and his government using explosives (gunpowder)
When Guy and his friends were caught, they were taken to the tower of London
Why fireworks? They remind us of the gunpowder Guy tried to use. The men put gunpowder in the basement of the Houses of Parliament
Why bonfires? To remind us that Guy was hanged, drawn and quartered and his body burnt
We even put a ‘Guy’ onto our bonfires! Children make ‘Guys’ and say ‘Penny for the Guy!’ People will give them money for their fireworks
Bonfire night celebrations • Often at weekends • If you’re lucky, your hosts may celebrate Bonfire Night tonight when you go to their houses • Art and Science this afternoon
Poppies You may see people wearing poppies this week They are to remind us of all the soldiers who died in all wars, but especially World War 1 and World War 2
Why poppies? They remind us of the battlefields of World War 1 in Belgium (Flanders) where there were poppy fields
Remembrance day is 11th November On the 11th hour Of the 11th day Of the 11th month
