  1. JAMES Marks of Maturity

  2. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 James 1:22-27 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets

  3. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 James 1:22-27 but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

  4. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • James’ audience is believers in Christ Jesus, and more specifically, Messianic Jews. • “We impart (truth) in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1Co 2:13-14)

  5. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Today, I am not addressing: • “Faith without works is dead.” • Bridling the tongue • Remaining “unstained from the world”

  6. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Today: • HEARING • (what, exactly – [defining law, religion]) • DECEIVING YOURSELF • DOING

  7. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Hearing: • Hearing… what? • The perfect law = the Word of God • John 8:29-32, “(God) is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him…(then) Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

  8. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 “Go and Be the Church!”

  9. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27

  10. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Deceiving Yourself: • Deceive (v22) = paralogizomai • Para = “mis” or “un” or “dis” • Logizomai= to take inventory • Deceive (v26) “apataō” = to cheat, deceive

  11. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27

  12. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Doing: • It is a great deal easier to do that which God gives us to do, no matter how hard it is, than to face the responsibilities of not doing it. • (B J Miller)

  13. James: Marks of Maturity Doing or Deceiving? James 1:22-27 • Doing: • “religion” = thrēskeia= ceremonial observance: - religion, worshipping. • Tithing and/or giving money. • Do SOMETHING • Good news: the prerequisite to being a doer is to be a hearer.
