Waves Transfer of energy through vibrations.
Types • Mechanical- requires a medium (water, air, metal, etc) to transfer energy. • Electromagnetic- requires nothing to transfer energy (like a microwave or magnet).
Vocabulary • Reflection- waves bouncing against objects • Refraction-waves traveling at different speeds • Constructive interference- when two waves collide and the crest is risen • Destructive interference- when two waves collide and crest is lowered
Parts of a wave • crest-top of a wave • Trough-bottom of a wave • Wavelength – the distance of a wave from crest to crest • Amplitude- distance from top of a wave to bottom of a wave • Frequency- how often a wave passes a certain point in a given amount of time
Wave types • Longitudinal • transverse
Waves in Every day life • Sound is the most common wave we experience. sound waves bounce off of walls, get refracted around walls and travel through non solid objects. • Another common wave we see is water. When a pebble is thrown into a pool, waves are sent out in all directions. The waves then bounce back off of the walls of the pool.
