What is CPAP? • CPAP is a continuous positive airway pressure treatment that is used for patients that have breathing disorders such as Sleep Apnea • CPAP is also used to treat premature infants that do not have fully developed lungs
CPAP Machine • Composed of a flow generator that pushes positive pressure into a tube that connects to a mask • The mask is placed on the patients nose and/or mouth, where the air enters and then continues to the throat keeping the upper airway open.
Advantages/Disadvantages Advantages • Decrease of possible risks of: • Arrhythmias • Heart Failure • High Blood pressure • Stroke • Improve overall sleep cycle • Improve survival rate for premature infants • Disadvantages • Lack of patient compliancy • Patient are uncomfortable with equipment
Future • Better patient compliancy • Research for possible alternative treatments • Change in design of the equipment
