Cramer, Professor Emeritus, jcramer@uw.edu Office: B451 Physics Astronomy Building,  Tel: (206) 543-9194 Lectures: MTThF 1:30 - 2:20 PM,  A102 Physics-Astronomy Building Laboratory:Labs start the 2nd week of the quarter.  It is recommended that you take the 117 laboratory simultaneously with the 114 lecture.  If you are not enrolled in the laboratory but wish to be, go to any lab section.  If there is space, you can do the first experiment and get into the lab; if not, try another section.  The instructor for the laboratory course is listed below. Purchase the Physics 117 Lab Manual at the Univ. Bookstore during the 1st week and before your first lab meeting. Lab and lecture are separate courses. The lab is pass/fail. Walker, Physics, 4th Edition, Part 1, UW Edition, Pearson (2010), ISBN 0-558-38504-4 • The Physics 117 Lab Manual may be purchased at the University Bookstore. Purchase this during the 1st week and before your first lab meeting. Lectures: Lectures will be given using PowerPoint. Lecture .ppt files are available through links on the Class Schedule. See also Class Syllabus. StudyCenter:Teaching assistants will be available for consultation in the Physics Study Center located in Room AM018.  (To reach the Physics Study Center, go down the stairs that circle around the Foucault pendulum and proceed toward the end of the hall.)  The Study Center is staffed from approximately 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on weekdays. Class Interactions: We will be using a HiTT response system correlated with the lectures, which also records attendance. Physics 114A

You should read this web page carefully for detailed information about the course and grading policies. Exams: There will be three one-hour midterm exams and a two-hour final exam.  The Midterms will cover the material as shown in the Schedule, and questions may be based on the Walker end-of-chapter problems and the WebAssign homework.  The Final will be comprehensive.  All exams will be closed book. One sheet of notes is allowed for the Midterms (3 for Final).  There will be NO make-up exams. If you take all three Midterms, the Final is optional. (See the Syllabus for details.) Homework: Lecture homework is submitted on the WebAssign system (see below) and is usually due at 11:59 PM on Thursdays. Assignment #1 is available now and is due by 11:59 PM on Thursday, January 16 (i.e., one week from Thursday). Make sure to do the Homework for Physics 114A (not 114B). CourseGrade: The Physics 114A grade is for this course only (not the lab) and is based on exams, homework, and clicker responses. The Physics 117 laboratory is a separate course that is graded pass/fail.  (See Syllabus for details.) Physics 114A

6. Administrative Details (4) WebAssign Information The Physics 114A Class List of registered students will be uploaded to WebAssign every day during Week 1. The names of late-registering students will require one day to show up on WebAssign. The first homework is due on January 17. Non-Matriculated students should go to see Susan Miller, Room C136 PAB, immediately. They can anticipate WebAssign problems. The WebAssign URL is:https://www.webassign.net/washington/login.html Logging onto WebAssign:WebAssign uses the standard UW login procedure. However, you may have to provide a payment in order to use it. Physics 114A

7. Administrative Details (5) Clicker Information • Physics 114A will use HiTT “clickers” that can be purchased at the University Bookstore. If you buy a used one, it should be the “RF” model. The old HiTT optical clickers and clickers used by the Chemistry Dept. do not work with our system. RF clickers should be set to Channel 01. • To receive credit for clicker class participation, your HiTT clicker must be registered. Register it using the link on the Syllabus page (instructions later). Class participation is worth up to 0.2 grade points of your Physics 114A class grade. • We will hold off on using the HiTT clickers during this first week to give everyone a chance to obtain one, but get yours soon. • During our clicker sessions, discussions with your neighbors is encouraged. Feel free to discuss the questions. You can change your mind about your answer entry twice. Physics 114A

10. About Prof. John G. Cramer I’m a Professor Emeritus of Physics. I’ve taught at UW since 1964, and I retired on January 1, 2010. This 2014 Physics 114A class is the last class that I will teach as a UW Faculty Member. I do experimental physics research in relativistic heavy ion physics using the RHIC accelerator facility and the STAR detector at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. I’m the originator of the transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics, and I’m doing an experimental test of quantum nonlocality . I have written two “hard” science fiction novels, Twistorand Einstein’s Bridge , both now available as eBooks in .epub and .mobi formats at: http://bookviewcafe.com/bookstore/?s=Cramer&submit=Search I write a bi-monthly science column (The Alternate View) in every other issue of Analog Science Fiction/Fact Magazine.
