“Was Jefferson Justified in Buying Louisiana?” (paragraph 1)Thomas Jefferson was elected the 3rd President of the United States by the House of Representatives. He was a Democratic-Republican who believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, which means that the national government should only have powers expressly listed in the Constitution. Jefferson, however, found a loophole when Napoleon offered to sell Louisiana to the United States. It was sold to us through a treaty. There are three reasons why Jefferson made this agreement: one, the size of the territory we were to get ; two, the cost of the territory; and three, the benefits it created for the United States.
