Be strong and courageous • Jeremiah 1:17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them. • Jeremiah 1:18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

7. Rejection is to be expect • Jeremiah 1:19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.

Jeremiah for Today • We must heed God’s call without excuse (Lk. 14:18-20). • We must go to whomever God wants to go, and say whatever God wants said (Act. 8:4). • We must not be afraid to speak God’s word. We must be strong and bold in the face of opposition (Mt. 10:28; Eph. 6:19; Phil. 1:27-28). • God’s word is used to build up and tear down (Act. 20:20,27; 2 Tim. 3:16; 4:2; Mat 19:29)

Israel’s past devotion • Jeremiah 2:1-2 1 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

Israel’s present defection • Jeremiah 2:4 Hearye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel: • Jeremiah 2:5 5 Thus saith the Lord, What iniquity has your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

18. Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:9 wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I plead. • Jeremiah 2:10 for pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

21. Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. • Jeremiah 2:12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.

Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:20 For of old time I have broken your yoke, and burst your bands; and you said, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree you wanders, playing the harlot. • Jeremiah 2:21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then did you turn into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

31. Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:24 Like a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that snuffed up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? All they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. • Jeremiah 2:25 Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst: but you said, there is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

43. Israel’s refusal • Jeremiah 3:2 Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness. • Jeremiah 3:3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has not been any latter rain; and you have a whore's forehead, you refused to be ashamed.

Jeremiah for Today • God’s people sometimes leave their “first love” (Rev. 2:1-5) • Many have a bad habit of changing God’s glory (Rom. 1:21-23) • Broken cisterns don’t hold water (2 Pet. 2:18-19) • Some openly reject the truth (2 Tim. 3:8) • Some are just too proud to confess their sin (1 Jn. 1:8-10) • Spiritual harlotry among God’s people is still a problem today (Jas. 4:4)
