Be strong and courageous • Jeremiah 1:17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them. • Jeremiah 1:18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

Rejection is to be expect • Jeremiah 1:19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.
Jeremiah for Today • We must heed God’s call without excuse (Lk. 14:18-20). • We must go to whomever God wants to go, and say whatever God wants said (Act. 8:4). • We must not be afraid to speak God’s word. We must be strong and bold in the face of opposition (Mt. 10:28; Eph. 6:19; Phil. 1:27-28). • God’s word is used to build up and tear down (Act. 20:20,27; 2 Tim. 3:16; 4:2; Mat 19:29)

Israel’s past devotion • Jeremiah 2:1-2 1 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
Israel’s past devotion • Jeremiah 2:3 Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the first fruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

Israel’s present defection • Jeremiah 2:4 Hearye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel: • Jeremiah 2:5 5 Thus saith the Lord, What iniquity has your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
Israel’s present defection • Jeremiah 2:6 neither said they, where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? • Jeremiah 2:7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered; ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.
Israel’s present defection • Jeremiah 2:8 the priests said not, where is the Lord? And they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:9 wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I plead. • Jeremiah 2:10 for pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. • Jeremiah 2:12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.
Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. • Jeremiah 2:14 Is Israel a servant? Is he a home born slave? Why is he spoiled?

Forsook the Lord • Jeremiah 2:19 Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backslidings shall reprove you: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that you have forsaken the Lord your God, and that my fear is not in you, saith the Lord God of hosts.

Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:20 For of old time I have broken your yoke, and burst your bands; and you said, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree you wanders, playing the harlot. • Jeremiah 2:21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then did you turn into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?
Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:22 for “though” you wash me with nitre, and took much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God. • Jeremiah 2:23 How can you say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baal? See your way in the valley, know what you have done: you are a swift dromedary traveling her ways;
Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:24 Like a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that snuffed up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? All they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. • Jeremiah 2:25 Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst: but you said, there is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:26 as the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, • Jeremiah 2:27 Saying to a stock, You are my father; and to a stone, You have brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
Committed idolatry • Jeremiah 2:28 But where are your gods that you have made? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: for according to the number of your cities is your gods, O Judah.

Denied the guilt of sin • Jeremiah 2:29 Wherefore will you plead with me? You all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord. • Jeremiah 2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
Denied the guilt of sin • Jeremiah 2:31 O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? A land of darkness. Wherefore say my people, we are lords; we will come no more unto thee? • Jeremiah 2:32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Jehovah’s invitation • Jeremiah 3:1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the Lord.

Israel’s refusal • Jeremiah 3:2 Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness. • Jeremiah 3:3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has not been any latter rain; and you have a whore's forehead, you refused to be ashamed.

Jeremiah for Today • God’s people sometimes leave their “first love” (Rev. 2:1-5) • Many have a bad habit of changing God’s glory (Rom. 1:21-23) • Broken cisterns don’t hold water (2 Pet. 2:18-19) • Some openly reject the truth (2 Tim. 3:8) • Some are just too proud to confess their sin (1 Jn. 1:8-10) • Spiritual harlotry among God’s people is still a problem today (Jas. 4:4)
