CHAPTER 1 SACRAMENTS: Encountering the Sacred
Sacramental Awareness • Catholic belief that God communicates through the people, places, actions, events, and experiences that shape a person’s life. • God is present in and communicates with us through all of creation. • God speaks and can be seen though all things.
Sacramental Dullness • Those who cannot perceive the sacred in their life or in the world. • Why are people dulled to the presence of the holy? • People are too busy • We are preoccupied by our daily routines, we cannot see or hear the signal or signs of God’s presence. • A great deal of pain and suffering in the world • We can become overwhelmed by tragedy and be dominated by gloom and pessimism that we cannot imagine God could be present. • People do not know where to look or what to look for.
A cure for Sacramental Dullness • Seeing the sacred in our lives and in the world requires taking a second, even closer look to see if we missed something the first time around. • The Christian vision: God created us and the entire world out of love, and that this makes all of creation sacred.
Grace: God’s Loving Presence in the World • Grace is the creative, sustaining, and transforming self-gift of God that is always being offered to us. • For Christians, the word grace expresses God’s gift of Self to us. • God loves us unconditionally • God is with us and for us • How does God communicate this love and concern for us?
God’s Body Language • Examples from the Bible • Examples from today • Through our friendships
Examples from the Bible • Old Testament—Moses recognized God in a burning bush, Samuel saw God in a dream, Abraham and Jacob in a passing stranger • New Testament (Gospels): Jesus described God in many images from nature, a father welcoming home his son
Examples from Today • God continues to communicate and be revealed today. • The rain that falls and grows • The people that cross our path and become friends • Those who dedicate their time to help others • By recognizing the many hints of God’s grace in our life, we experience sacraments in the broadest sense of the term: God’s loving presence made visible and tangible in our life here and now.
God Speaks Through Our Friendships • “Perhaps the most basic sacrament of God’s saving presence is the sacrament of human love and friendship.” • In the Christian vision, our personal friendships reveal God’s friendship with us as well. • Friends who are open, honest, and caring for each other not only let another person into their life but also make room for God.
