More people than ever before are playing games • Around 21m gaming devices sold in the UK since 1995 • Enough for nearly every British household to have one • Across Europe – over 85m pieces of hardware sold in that period – and nearly 300m globally • Over 200m pieces of leisure software sold in UK – enough for every household to have nearly 9 titles each • Close to 1bn titles sold across Europe and nearly 3bn globally Source: Screen Digest

  4. The UK is the largest leisure software market in Europe and 3rd largest in the world (€m)

  5. UK Government is Interested! • Policy, however: • encourages innovation horizontally across sectors with high growth potential • Enables regionally driven initiatives • Provides environment to help enterprise to set up and grow.

  6. Encouraging horizontal innovation • Examples: • R & D Tax Credits • Technology Programme (£320 m over 3 years) • Business Link network

  7. Regional initiatives • Examples: • Proof of Concept- Scottish Enterprise • Gripp –Games Republic Integrated Prototype Production- Yorkshire • RVCF (Regional VC Funds)

  8. Environment to help enterprise Evidence: • UK is the EU leader in attracting inward investment • 4.3 million SMEs in UK (575,000 more than in 1997) • Un-employment at 4.7%
