Students will be able to: Express an opinion in writing. List ways that tax money is spent and collected. Communicate ideas using technology.
Directions • Students will use table “Response Groups” to discuss questions posed by the teacher & the class and then one member will share the groups findings with the whole class.
Questions for Table Groups • Where does the tax money come from? Who pays taxes and for what reasons? • Where does the tax money go? How does the tax money provide things that benefit you?
Taxes • We will use Kidsperation as a class to help us list sources of tax revenue (where does it come from). Example: Property taxes
Taxes 2 • We will use Kidsperation as a class to help us list the ways tax money is spent. • Where does tax money go? How do you benefit? • Example: To pay Police officers.
Taxes 3 • And now………the big QUESTION. • Do you think we should continue to pay taxes or not? Why or why not?
Directions • Students will present their opinion to: “Should we continue to pay taxes or not.” using their choice of software. Word? Power Point? Pixie? Kidsperation? ?????? • In a paragraph students must list at least 3 reasons and illustrate them with 1 or more graphics. Work must have a title, opening and concluding sentence. In addition, provide a short paragraph at the end that explains why you picked the software that you used. • Your audience for your writing is a classmate who will review your paragraph.

Directions • We will trade papers with someone who has a different opinion and discuss.
Questions • Why do you think taxes were “invented?” • How would you spend the tax money? • Should anyone be excused from paying taxes?If so Why?
Taxes- To Pay or Not to Pay Student Response You hear about taxes all the time. My dad says he has to pay too much. I don’t think you should have to pay taxes if you don’t use them. We use teachers but not police or fire fighters. We use the roads but not a lot and we don’t tear them up. It would be more fair for the people who use the services to pay for them with taxes. I used Power Point because it is easy to use and move pictures around. Word makes moving pictures hard.
