Oak Valley Middle School 2011-2012 Responsible & EthicalUse of Technology Adapted from: Johnson, D. (1999). Teaching Students Right from Wrong in the Digital Age. Retrieved from: http://www.janinelim.com/bc/4thur/ethics.pdf
Objective • We are exploring new ways for Oak Valley students to use technology in responsible ways. Over the course of this year, we want our students: • To know how to use technology responsibly and ethically. • To know how to keep personal information confidential. • To be sensible about how we present ourselves, our families, and our school. • To be intelligent consumers of information.
Objective • Today, we will examine some common situations in which students will need to make responsible choices. • We will continue our discussion using the 3 Ps of Responsible Use (Johnson, 1999): 1. Privacy 2. Property 3. Appropriate Use • Today, we are going to focus on the issue of Privacy.
3Ps: Privacy • Quick Write Activity: Compose a thoughtful response to each of the questions below. Your teacher may have you share in pairs, groups, or as a class. (10-15 min) • What does privacy mean? And, what do you think electronic privacy may mean? • Is what you text, email, blog or otherwise communicate electronically “private?” Why? Why not? 3 Ps of Responsible Use (Johnson, 1999): Privacy, Property, Appropriate Use
Cases for Discussion: Privacy • Read quietly, as your teacher reads aloud. On your paper, be prepared to make a decision about John’s choices. Support your decision with two to three sentences explaining your thinking. Your teacher may have you share your reasoning aloud. (5 to 10 min) • John fills out a survey form on a computer game web page. In the following weeks, he receives several advertisements in the mail as well as dozens of email messages about new computer games. Is what John did: a) Right b) Wrong c) Sometimes right and sometimes wrong depending on the situation d) I don't know 3 Ps of Responsible Use (Johnson, 1999): Privacy, Property, Appropriate Use
Cases for Discussion: Privacy Discussion Points: • How much would you like a company to know about you? Do you think that the company who knows a lot about you will use it to customize products for you or only to manipulate you? • We need to understand that businesses and organizations use information to market products. Information given to one organization may be sold to others. (5 to 10 min) 3 Ps of Responsible Use (Johnson, 1999): Privacy, Property, Appropriate Use
Closing… • We are exploring new ways for Oak Valley students to use technology in responsible ways. We want our students: • To know how to use technology responsibly and ethically. • To know how to keep personal information confidential. • To be sensible about how we present ourselves, our families, and our school. • To be intelligent consumers of information.
