  2. Totalitarian Regimes Fascism & Nazism Communism A form of government that maintains complete control over its citizens. Individuals have NO rights, and the government suppresses all forms of opposition. They typically use secret police, propaganda and use widespread terror tactics.

  8. 1939 France • Leader: Édouard Daladier ~ Prime Minister • Type of Government: Democratic • Recent Events: • Did NOTHING while Germany & Italy began gobbling up European nations • Established a defensive alliance with Poland • Non-aggression treaty with the U.S.S.R. • Tried to establish a mutual alliance w/ USSR, but talks stalemated

  9. 1939 Great Britain • Leader: Neville Chamberlain ~ Prime Minister George VI ~ King (King’s Speech) • Type of Government: Constitutional Monarchy • Recent Events: • Also did NOTHING to stop fascist aggression. • Promised to defend Poland if Germany attacked it. • Joined in the talks to establish a mutual alliance with the USSR.

  10. 1939 United States • Leader: Franklin D. Roosevelt • Type of Government: Democratic Republic • Recent Events: • Neutrality Acts ~ 1935, 36,37 and 39 ~ Designed to keep the U.S. out of the war, but it slowly favored the U.S. assisting the Allies in the war.

  11. SPARK!! • September 1, 1939 ~ Hitler invades Poland and employs his “blitzkrieg” military tactics against Poland. • World War II has begun!
