  1. To College or Not?

  2. “I’m Tired of Learning” • I want to get on with my life • I want to relax • I want to hang out with my friends • I want to move out of my house and be on my own • I want to get married • I got a good job • My uncle promised me he’d get me a job • I’m going to win the lottery • I’m going to inherit a lot of money

  3. What do I need college for anyway?

  4. Life is Like a Sewer….What you get out depends on what you put in • So is the mind • Some minds have wheels, some wings • College is an adventure • The mind can see over the horizon • The cranium does not encase the mind unless you believe that is so • What skills do you have now to market yourself?

  5. Ask yourself the following? • Can I learn how to learn? • Am I willing to learn more? • What price am I willing to pay for success? • Are my dreams big? • Am I afraid of challenges? • Could I fail? • Am I the only one who is scared?

  6. What will you miss if you don’t try?

  7. Fear of Failure • College is as much about learning what you want to learn as it is about what you don’t want to learn • What you learn about most is what you don’t know you should know • You learn your limits or maybe, that you don’t have as many as you thought • High School will be a memory but college is an experience

  8. What’s different about college? • The onus is on you • The professor is there to inspire as much as to teach • Learning is far more independent • Excuses don’t work • Results are more the result of effort than intelligence • College is about adulthood and decision making

  9. They don’t take attendance so do I need to go to class? • No you don’t have to • You don’t have to buy the textbook • They won’t ask you questions in class • They will lecture and leave • Professors already know why education is important; it’s up to you to find out • Work hard when you’re young, work easy when you’re not • The reverse is also true unfortunately

  10. What do you like to do? What do you think about? • Set a tentative goal • You goal may be modified in college (probably will) • My parents are pressuring me to chose a career before I go to college or they’re not paying for it • My parents insist I should be a doctor or a lawyer or don’t waste my time in college • See yourself as what you dream you might want to be and try it on for size • Don’t settle for anything less than your dreams • Ignore conformity and negative peers

  11. Here’s the big question? • Where will you be in five years? Ten years? • If you’re not the lead dog, the view is always the same • Running dogs never notice the fleas • You can’t hit the bullseye unless you set up a target • If it’s to be, it’s up to ………
