Structure of IYA Galileo Teacher Training Program 110 “Single Point of Contacts” for each Nation -- SPCO (Leonard Nimoy Story) 2) Kick-off Meeting at UNESCO HQ in January in Paris 3) Try to do some training in Paris Start Video Conference Based training and follow up for 110 Nations (We have 30 nations covered already)

Who is our target? Educational System / Scientists & Society Interaction What we want to deliver / accomplish ? CHANGE THE WAY WE TEACH AND LEARN • Science culture  Literate citizens • Acquisition of key skills • Development of Critical Thinking • Problem Solving Experience • Citizenship awareness • Teachers continuous professional development WE ALL LIVE ON THE SAME PLANET ...JUST 1 PLANET

  5. Key skills to be developed Different disciplines. The whole school can be involved in this project A project devoted to create a global network of schools collaborating in challenging tasks.

Hong Kong Accord on Global Science Education A group of about 14 teachers, scientists, educational researchers and others met in Hong Kong to develop a document to set international goals for science teaching and learning (HOU and our experience with teachers heavily influenced this document)

Hong Kong Accord on Global Science Education Main Themes: • Powerful, Engaging, Coherent Curricula, Activities and Teaching to Develop a New World View • Education Mediated by Technology • Scientific Behavior: • Science as a Culture • The Role of Family Life and Culture: • The Global. Ethical, and Collaborative Nature of Science: • Assessments: How can we assess what children truly need to know to thrive in our rapidly changing world? • Teacher Support and Professional Development Teachers are critical players in preparing knowledge and building community. In order to appreciate and assist such a human activity, they should have at least 10% of their time for professional development. Quality Teachers should be recognized and respected. Teacher salaries should commensurate with other professionals • College Science. • Sustainability and Helping Developing Nations Advance
