  2. Word Problems • Bob is decorating the hallway. One wall measures 2m by 3m. The other wall measures 2m by 2m. What is the total area he will have to paint? • Each tin of paint covers 2m². How many tins does Bob need to buy? • Bob has a ten pound note. Each tin of paint costs £2.99. Can he afford to paint the whole hallway? Explain your answer.

  3. Word Problems Cont. • Mr Kipling opened a packet of sweets to decorate his cake with. He found 3 red sweets, 2 blue and 5 green sweets. What percentage are red? • What is the ratio of blue to green sweets? • Mr Kipling ate a green sweet. What is the ratio of blue to green sweets now?

  4. Word Problems Cont. • Mr Wonka’s chocolatastic cake for four people needs 200g of chocolate. How much chocolate would he need if he made the cake for eight people? • Grandpa Joe makes up the recipe for four people with 50g of raisins and 150g of chocolate. How many grams of raisins will he need in a cake for eight people?

  5. Word Problems Cont. • Robbie Williams is paid £175 for appearing in an advert. He shares this equally with his mum. How much does she get? What percentage is this?

  6. Word Problems Cont. • Bart visits the Kwik-E-Mart to buy a super squishee. They usually cost £1.00 but Apu has reduced them by 20%. • How much does he pay for his super squishee? • How much change would he get from £5 note? • Apu gives Bart £3.20 change and a lollipop costing 20p. Is this fair? Explain your answer.

  7. Word Problems Cont. • On June 26th I posted a letter to Belgium. It arrived 5 days later. On what date did it arrive? • The school bus weighs 2000kg and took 1 ¼ hours to travel 80 km. How far did it travel in 2½ hours?

  8. Miscellaneous Problems • 20 sweets in a bag. Tom eats ½ of the sweets. • How many are left? • How many sweets did he eat?

  9. Miscellaneous Problems • In one football season, the referee gave out 43 red cards and 27 yellow cards. What is the difference between the number of red cards and the number of yellow cards?

  10. Miscellaneous Problems • I have 5 pencils in each packet, if I have 45 pencils altogether how many packets would I have? • A box holds 6 eggs. If there are 50 eggs how many boxes will I have?

  11. Miscellaneous Problems • I have 50 football stickers. I give 6 stickers to a friend. In return she gives me 11 different stickers. How many stickers do I have now? • By how many has the sticker collection increased?

  12. Miscellaneous Problems • I want to buy some 99p jelly babies and a 37p Mars Bar. I have £1.50. Do I have enough money to buy the sweets that I want? • I have £4.30. How many creme eggs can I buy if they cost 30p each?

  13. Miscellaneous Problems • My dance class starts at 2:30pm. There are 18 dancers. How many rows of 3 dancers will there be? • It takes me 25minutes to walk to school. If I arrive at 8:50am what time did I leave home? • If I left 10mins later what time would I arrive in school?

  14. Miscellaneous Problems • If a coat has 5 buttons and I have 8 coats, how many buttons are there altogether? • If I have 3 silver coins in my pocket, what could they be?
