Conflicts Continue • After the Treaty of Paris, the British moved out of many of their forts in the United States. • Without the help of the British, it became even harder for Native Americans to stop settlers from taking their lands in the Northwest Territory.
Michikinikwa • To fight the settlers, many Native Americans who lived in the Northwest Territory decided to unite (join together). • Michikinikwa Miami leader known as “Little Turtle”. • Conflicts worsened due to the Treaty of Harmar. • 1790 The United States sent General Josiah Harmar to attack the Miami and Shawnee. • Miami leader Michikinikwa and Shawnee leader Blue Jacket led tribes to defeat Harmar. • 1791 Michikinikwa won an important battle against soldiers led by Arthur St. Clair • St. Clair’s Defeat.
The Tide Turns • Michikinikwa’s victories over Harmar and St. Clair shocked United States leaders. • 1792 President George Washington placed Anthony Wayne in command of the western forces (Northwest Territory).
The Battle of Fallen Timbres • 1793 Wayne ordered the construction of several forts to defend the frontier. • Fort Recovery built where St. Clair had been defeated. • Native American forces
