Learning Objectives • Identify personal and cultural experiences which influence working with clients with mental illness • Describe your experience with a thought disorder simulation • Articulate the rationale for various steps of an investigation • Identify and practice elements of a suicide assessment

Team Based Learning All participants are expected to have completed the Mental Health in APS eLearnings DO: • Work as a team • Identify the best answer or most accurate or complete plan • Utilize the unique skills of your teammates • Use your Smartphone (if you have one) to look up information • Vote on team decisions • Evaluate your teammates’ strengths and use them as resources • Respect privacy • Have fun!
Team Based Learning DON’T: • Look for other teams to provide an answer • Work as individuals • Be afraid to be wrong • Pressure other team members to think as the majority does. Vote on team decisions • Expect the facilitator to teach during this session

Building Teams • Please form groups based on how long you’ve worked in APS. • Not from APS but work with older adults/adults with disabilities • 0-6 months • 7-12 months • 13-24 months • Over 24 months

ACTIVITY I:Characteristics of the Disorders Working as a team, write as many characteristics on your assigned diagnosis. • Yes, you may use your smart phone if you like! • You have 10 minutes • Designate someone to present your team’s findings to the group • Your team will be scored by the group 5 possible points
Scoring Each team has 2 minutes to present Scoring: 5= comprehensive/thorough 3= essential/most of the characteristics 1= some of the characteristics

Simulation Activity • Create triads • Client • “Voices” uses tube, whisper into client’s ear the prepared script. • APS Worker interviews client. Asks him/her to complete a form • After 3 minutes, switch roles

The Case of Caroline Carson Client Name: Caroline Carson Age: 65 Ethnicity: African-American Language: English Employment: Retired bank teller Marital Status: Widowed Living Situation: Lives in own home Allegations: Self-neglect Reporting Party: Physician’s office
Caroline Carson • Has been diagnosed with breast cancer 6 months ago • RP unable to contact client for follow-up • Husband died 12 months ago • Client retired from bank when husband died
At the Door At 11:00AM, you make an unannounced visit to client’s home which is an upper middle class neighborhood. The garden is overgrown. A neighbor watches you from across the street as you approach the house. You knock several times at the door, and call out, asking to be let in. After two minutes, a woman’s voice calls out from behind the door, “Whatever it is, I’m not interested-go away.”
ACTIVITY II:ACCESSING THE HOME 10 possible points (5 for correct answer, 5 for correct rationale) As a team, discuss which is the best response and why it is the best response. You must agree as a team on the answer and the rationale. You have 10 minutes before reporting out as a group. Leave immediately, leaving your card in the door, plan on coming back the next day. Call the mental health crisis assessment team in your area. Call the police to assist getting in the door. Knock on the door again and try again. Go over the neighbor and enlist her help in getting into the see the client.
INTERVIEWING THE CLIENT • Alert, cooperative • One-word answers • States “I’m fine” • Has telephone calls from daughters weekly • Attends church weekly, otherwise doesn’t leave the house • Sleeps most of the time • Doesn’t feel like eating when she’s up
ACTIVITY IIIWhat should you do next and why? 10 possible points (5 for correct answer, 5 for correct rationale) At your tables, discuss which is the best action and why. You must agree as a team on the answer and the rationale for the answer. You have 10 minutes before reporting out as a group. Tell her you know about the breast cancer diagnosis and explore her treatment options with her. Get consent to speak with Mrs. DeLa Cruz, conclude the visit and interview Mrs. DeLa Cruz for additional information. Assess client for depression and possible suicide risk. Refer the client to community resources for bereavement counseling and conclude the interview. Recommend the client go see her doctor to find out why she has no energy and conclude the interview.
