  1. Review • What is a polygon? • A 2D closed figure with three or more straight sides • What is a parallelogram? • a 4 sided polygon with opposite sides of equal length • What does parallel mean? • Lines that are across from each other and never meet because they are the same distance apart.

  2. Review • What does perpendicular mean? • lines that meet or cross at a right angle. • How many degrees in a right angle? • 90 • What is the formula for area of a rectangle? • a = l x w • What is the formula for area of a parallelogram? • a = b x h

  3. Triangles • Can you tell me the three types of triangles?

  4. Triangles • Right Triangle – has one 90° angle • Acute Triangle – all angles are less than 90° • Obtuse Triangle – has one angle greater than 90° • AREA OF A TRIANGLE ??

  5. Area of a triangle Turn to Page 200 in the book Look at examples 1, 2, 3 together

  6. Area of a triangle • Example three • Notice that in order to make a right triangle, he had to draw lines outside the triangle • If it’s obtuse, chances are you have to do this • It has the same height and base as the other two • Therefore, its are is 30cm 2
