Wood Smoke Abatement Program • Genesis of the program • Current grant from UCAIR • Currently have three change-outs in progress with help from Salt Lake CAP, with 2-3 more planned • Potential to change out all homeowners on the sole source list
K-12 Educational Outreach and Curriculum overview • Air Aware program since 2010 • Breathe has reached 4000 students so far • Mobile air monitors placed in schools beginning last year in partnership with DAQ • Utah State Idle Free Awareness Month in partnership with Utah Clean Cities • Elementary, middle school, and high school assemblies and classroom activities • New for 2014-2015 academic year • Web-based educational resources for teachers at all grade levels • Web-based clearinghouse to coordinate all school-centered efforts
K-12 Curriculum Outdoor pollution: particulates & ground-level ozone • Major sources • Basic chemistry of pollution • Monitoring methods and units (DAQ) • Utah topography & meteorology (DAQ) • Anatomy of lungs, heart, and blood circulation and the health impacts of air pollution Solutions • Individual actions that can make a difference • Transportation infrastructure facilitating active transport and mass transit • Laws that help: how the law defines and controls pollution • Technologies that help: scrubbers, catalytic converters, clean fuel sources, energy efficient technology • Policies that help: land use planning (Wasatch Choice for 2040), zoning, transit funding • Legislating change
