Literary Terms/Figurative Language Metaphor- a comparison that shows how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Ex. The goalkeeper is a rock. Simile – a comparison between two unlike nouns using “like” or “as” Ex. Ogres are like onions.
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Symbol - A symbol is a person, place, or thing comes to represent an abstract idea or concept -- it is anything that stands for something beyond itself. • Ex. Chart • Foreshadowing- hints to what will happen later in story. • Ex. Kevin tells Max about Dr. Spivak and his future bionic body.
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Personification- the assigning of human traits to things (animals, objects. etc.) colours, qualities, and ideas. Ex. The embarrassed clock covered its face with its hand. • Climax- the point in the story where the main character's point of view changes, or the most exciting/action filled part of the story. • It is also known as the main turning point in the story. The climax or turning point of a narrativework is its point of highest tension or drama. • Example- the supreme ordeal
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Stereotype- a popular belief about specific types of individuals. Stereotypes are standardized and simplified conceptions of people based on some prior assumptions. • Ex. the way in which people view Kevin • Theme- the central topic, subject, or concept the author is trying to point out • Ex. -The value of teamwork (friendship) -Appearances can be deceiving
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Sarcasm- a sharp or cutting expression or remark, usually conveyed through irony or understatement. • Setting- includes the time, location, and everything in which a story takes place, and initiates the main backdrop and mood of a situation.
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Conflict- the struggle between two opposing forces • Interpersonal conflict- A disagreement or differing views between two or more people over a particular idea, thought, or action • External conflict- • Internal conflict-
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Resolution- outcome/conclusion/ending (conflict is resolved) • Characterization- the art of creating characters for a narrative, including the process of conveying information about them. • The method used by a writer to develop a character. The method includes : showing the character's appearance, displaying the character's actions, revealing the character's thoughts, letting the character speak, and getting the reactions of others.
Literary Terms/Figurative Language • Suspense- a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions. • Suspense is a lead-up to a big event or dramatic moment, with tension being a primary emotion felt as part of the situation.
