INTRODUCTION ACEC EMC Workshop Objective • Inform industry participants about the importance of EMC and the IEC procedures and standards for dealing with EMC
INTRODUCTION Approach • Discuss the role of ACEC which advises the Standardization Management Board (SMB) regarding EMC matters • Review the work underway in the two principal horizontal EMC committees in the IEC -- CISPR and TC 77 • Provide an example of EMC work ongoing in an IEC product committee, TC 62 (Electrical Equipment in Medical Practice) • Review several important IEC test standards and discuss EMC protection methods
INTRODUCTION EMC Terminology • Terms • EMC = ElectroMagnetic Compatibility • HF = High Frequency: f > 9 kHz • LF = Low Frequency: f < 9 kHz • Source to “victim” approach • Source: Emission • EM environment (both natural and man made) • Propagation and coupling • Victim: Immunity (susceptibility is lack of immunity)
