Marking and Exploring Taxonomic Concept Data Paul Craig Martin Graham Jessie Kennedy Centre for Information and Software Systems School of Computing Napier University, Edinburgh, UK
What We Do • We develop graphical user interfaces that contrast multiple classifications
Matching By Hand… • Matching taxa by hand is extremely difficult & time-consuming, even with small data sets
Matching by Name… • Our interfaces can automatically match between classifications by name
Matching by Concept • Same names don’t mean the same things in different taxonomies… they are different concepts • Thus synonymy, homonymy etc • Taxonomic Concept Schema (TCS) includes mechanisms for defining relationships between concepts
Matching by Concept • To get this data in though requires an expert to assess and mark up the relationships in TCS
Matching by Concept • To get this data in though requires an expert to assess and mark up the relationships in TCS
Making Concept Relations • So we developed a drag & drop interface to allow experts to build relationship sets between classifications • Takes in a TCS data file • User picks a pair of classifications • User chooses a relationship type • Drag between concepts to connect
Two Classifications Relationship being made Related Concepts Existing Concept Relations Making Concept Relations Concept
Matching By Concept • VIDEO
Viewing Concept Relationships • Relationships between two taxonomies can be viewed in the relationship creation tool • To view across multiple taxonomies simultaneously we adapted our multiple classification browser
Viewing Concept Relationships • Takes in a TCS data file • Shows all classifications • User navigates or selects a concept • Hovering with the mouse reveals relationships • Marking (colouring) highlights those related concepts and also those related to its child concepts
Viewing Concept Relationships Related concepts Concept relations Concept under investigation
Viewing Concept Relationships • VIDEO
Conclusions • We can generate TCS relationships between classifications • We can show TCS relationships between classifications • The effectiveness of the tools with regard to these relationships is still unknown • We need your help!
