  3. What is an Ultrasound? • High-frequency sound pulses sent into body • Sound waves reflect back when boundary is reached • Machine calculates distance of waves • A picture is formed

  4. Ultrasounds as a Computer • Has a CPU to: • Send electrical currents to probe • Do calculations to process data • Form image on display

  5. Ultrasounds as Computers Cont… • Display is the monitor • Keyboard allows operator to add notes and take measurements • Thermal printers • Storage on floppy disk, hard disk, CD, or DVD

  6. Improvements to Ultrasounds • 3D Ultrasounds combine many 2D pictures to form one 3D picture • Can detect cancerous and benign tumors • Detect abnormal child development

  7. More Improvements • GE 4D Ultrasound creates video of image by adding element of time • Doppler Ultrasound allows the direction and speed of a moving object to be looked at • Doppler is used to look at the heart
