What is addison’s disease? • Addison's disease is an endocrine or hormonal disorder that occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. • In Addison's disease, your adrenal glands produce too little cortisol and often insufficient levels of aldosterone as well. • Addison's disease can be life-threatening.

  3. How is this autoimmune? • Addison's disease results from an autoimmune reaction in which the body's immune system makes antibodies against the cells of the adrenal cortex and slowly destroys them.

  4. Causes • Atrophy of the adrenal glands • Surgical removal of both adrenal glands • Infection of the adrenal glands • Tuberculosis and histoplasmosis are the most common infections that destroy adrenal gland tissue.

  5. Symptoms • Weakness • Weight loss • Dizziness when standing • Muscle aches • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea • Patches of darkened skin or unexplained tanning. • Sharp muscle pain • Dehydration • Hypotension • Loss of • consciousness

  6. Diagnosis & treatment • It can only be diagnosed when Cortisol levels are checked regularly or if a patient is getting uneven skin patches. • Treatment includes: Hormone replacement and an increased about of sodium in the patient’s diet. Fun Fact: President John F. Kennedy was probably the single most famous case of Addison's Disease.
