Characterization The process in which an author tells the reader about a character
Direct Characterization • The author tells the audience what the personality of the character is. • The impatient boy and the loud girl were both ill mannered and did not obey their mother.
Indirect Characterization • The author shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization: Speech Thoughts Effects on others toward the character Actions Looks STEAL
Speech Uhhh, goodie, goodie, goodie. Tanks fer yer help while I visited me mom! • What does the character say? • How does the character speak?
Thoughts I know uncle says I am in charge of my destiny, but getting the Avatar will prove my honor to my father! • What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings?
Effect • What is revealed by the character’s effect on other people? • How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
Actions • What does the character do? • How does the character behave?
Looks • What does the character look like? • How does the character dress?
