  1. Warm-Up: To be turned in Name the following compound: PbCO3 Write a balanced chemical formula for: Potassium Nitrate

  2. Writing and Naming Acids

  3. Properties of Acids • Sour taste • Turn pH paper yellow • Turn litmus paper red • Two types: binary and oxyacids

  4. Binary Acids • Consist of hydrogen + halogen HF, HCl, HBr; HI • Naming binary acids • Start with hydrogen- drop the ending • Take the halogen; drop the ending, replace with –ic HF hydrofluoric acid HCl hydrochloric acid HBr hydrobromic acid HI- hydriodic acid

  5. Oxyacids • Contain hydrogen + polyatomic ion • 2H+ + SO42- H2SO4 • H+ + NO2-  HNO2 • Naming Oxyacids • Look at the ending of the polyatomic ion • If ion ends in –ate, change ending to –ic • H2SO4  Sulfuric acid • If ion ends in –ite, change ending to –ous • HNO2  Nitrous acid

  6. Homework Have the following acids memorized by Friday:
