  1. California Gold Rush and 49ers lost By: Yoselin, Connor, Sam

  2. How it started • James Marshall found gold while working for John Sutter at his ranch in Northern California. After he found this gold, news spread throughout California, and later to the rest of the country. • Gold became so popular that the population increased by 86,000 people who tried to make a living from gold. • What happened when they got to California? • What happened to the pots and population as a result of gold?

  3. Immigration • Immigrants came across the pacific ocean and overflowed San Francisco from a population of 800 to 50,000 people! This was from 1848 to 1849. • The city increased 49,200 in 1 year because of the gold and the plentiful amount of it. • Immigrants came from all over the world mostly from across the country and mexico.

  4. Business • Gold created lots of mining companies. Back then, mining was free. If you found a gold nugget it was yours to keep. The first immigrants, and miners where the first to get the most wealthy, and the most gold. Many men started companies with friends and split the profitt. One company that started and is still around was Wells Fargo.

  5. Death Rate • Many men died in the process of gold mining. The miners died from exhaustion and from rocks and other objects falling on them. • It was very hard work and had no guarantee of finding gold and becoming rich. • The death rate increased rapidly from mining accidents. One out of every five miners that came to California died in 6 months or less.

  6. State 31 • California was noticed a lot more then it used to be. The gold pretty much made California one of the most famous states. It was declared as the 31st state of the United States. This occurred in 1850. • California won the war with Mexico and wasn't’t part of Mexico any more. • After the end of Mexican-American war California was ceded to U.S on February 2, 1848.

  7. Size • Buildings and homes were built throughout the state of California. This made it into a larger and rich city. This was a city of wealth at the time. However, men lost everything to gold mining sometimes. They were so obsessed with trying to get gold, that they lost everything they had.

  8. 49ers • California got their football team name, the 49ers, from the gold rush that occurred in 1848. This name came from the gold prospectors that came in 1849. This is how they got the name of the 49ers. This name reflected on the men and woman who traveled west to California for gold.

  9. Questions • What do you think would be the most common death for miners in the 1800s? • How much gold was discovered in the California Gold Rush? • Do you think James Marshall should have kept it a secret? Why or why not?

  10. Answers • Equipment failure and exhaustion. • After the California gold rush the miners found roughly 12 million ounces of gold. • No, because There would still be unfound gold in the state of California.
