Louisiana Purchase- Land from Mississippi River to Oregon bought from France for very cheap. Mexican Texas- Mexico won it’s independence from Spain, but worries that the US would try to steal Texas. They recruited US citizens to become Mexican citizens and settle in Texas. Why? Discuss. Texas Revolution- Texas fights Mexico for its independence. Texas eventually wins and becomes an independent nation. (1836).
So how did Texas become a state? After much debate about whether or not Texas would be a slave state. It was admitted as a slave state in 1845. Mexico was not happy. They attack-Mexican War- US wins. See page 325.
Far West- Rocky Mountains to Pacific Ocean. Who is on the western lands? Native Americans. See page 329 and 332. Mountain Men- fur trappers who first explored and mapped the Rocky Mountain area. Rendezvous System- Trappers stay in the mountains and then meet up at a set time and place to trade, sell and restock supplies.

Indian Wars- map on p. 436 Cattle Boom- Cattle live in the west. People live in the east. This causes supply and demand issues. Cattle were raised in Texas and then driven to Kansas to get on the trains and move east to Chicago. Why Chicago? Map on p. 453
Gold Rush California Gold Rush 1830 the American Population in California was 500. This grew slowly during the next 19 years. John Augustus Sutter- Had a trading post on the California Trail. In 1848 they discovered. 49ers- Name for the 40,000 people who flooded California in 1849 after gold was discovered.
Mining life- Lots of crime, drinking, fighting, gambling. They lived in tents. Few succeeded. Very unstable places. Levi Strauss- Tent maker turned jeans maker. Why/How? Alaska- US Secretary of State bought Alaska in 1867 and found gold several times. People moved to Alaska, which became a state in 1959.
Industry and Big Business Steel- Iron that gets hardened and the impurities are melted off so it won’t rust. Very strong, very useful. This was known as the Bessemer process. Produced more steel in one day than previous methods did in a week. 1850 Grew the Great Lakes Region and manufacturing.
Oil- Steam engine drill made finding oil much easier. 1859. People flooded areas with oil to drill for their own fortunes. Railroads- Due to cheap steel railroads grew across the country from 1870-1890. Transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 making cross-countrytravel possible by train.
Tycoons Andrew Carnegie- Invested in steel. Controlled the manufacturing and price and sold his steel for less all over the world. Sold his company for $500 million in 1901. Donated $350 million to charity, mostly libraries. Left very little to his children. John D. Rockefeller- Oil Man. Gained control of the entire oil industry, creating a monopoly. Cornelius Vanderbilt- Railroad man. Controlled railroads from New York to Chicago. Bought small lines and combined them to make large lines. Controlled over 4500 miles of railroad track. George Pullman- designed cars that made travel very comfortable and the railroads more appealing to passengers. George Westinghouse- Designed air brake system that went into all railroad cars so they could stop at the same time

Farming Farms- Due to all of the open space in the west, farming became a huge industry. Map on p. 533. How do people on the farms make their money?
Imperialism and Expansion Imperialism and Expansion- Pacific Ocean. Hawaii, Philippines and other islands. Caribbean Sea-Cuba and Panama Hawaii- We wanted a naval base and some things they grow (bananas and pineapple) Other countries also wanted Hawaii and Hawaii wanted to remain its own country. US was successful because we offered the best military protection and the best subsidies.
Philippines and Cuba- Spain controlled/owned them. Both wanted to be independent from Spain and were willing to go to war over it. The US did not want them to go to war, but did want them free from Spanish rule. Why- so the US could take them over.
In the end both nations won their independence from Spain. Cuba became independent. Philippines became controlled by the US. This was difficult because there was some question as to whether the Filipinos would accept the US and if they US had any business in the Philippines.
