A: 1. Abolitionist- People who fought to free slaves 2. Alien – a person not born In a certain country other wise known as an immigrant. 3. Arsenal –a place where they store guns and ammunition. 4. Artifact- An item left behind by early people.
B: Boycott- to refuse buy an item Burgesses- elected representatives to an assembly. Boom town- where business and population grow fast. Blockade runner- people who sail in and out of blockades.
C: Californios- Mexicans who lived in Cali Caravel- Small fast ships with a broad bow. Cash crop- Farm crop raised to be sold for $$. Constitution- a formal plan of government.
D: Desert- leaving without permission. Dissent- disagreement with or opposition to an opinion Draft- A person selected by military service Drought- No or little rain for a long time
E: Effigy- Rag figure representing a unpopular person. Electoral college- special group of people who vote. Emancipate- to free from slavery Embargo- order of prohibiting trade with other counties.
F: Factory system- systems that increase production. Famine- extreme shortage of food. Federal dept.- amount of $ owed by the government. Federalism- sharing of power between federal and state goverment
G: Guerilla tactics- surprise attack. Guerilla warfare- HIT-AND-RUN Genocide- destruction of racial political or cultural group. Greenback- money issued during the civil war.
H: Human rights- rights such as freedom Holocaust- people who killed Jews, Nazis Hieroglyphics- ancient writing Habeas corpus- a legal order for an inquiry to determine weather a person has be rightfully imprisoned.
I: Impeach- to formally charge someone with misconduct in office. Import- to buy goods from another countries. Implied powers- powers not implied in the constitution. Impressments- forcing people into service like the navy.
