  2. World Health Organization (WHO) • Sponsored by United Nations • Coordinates international health activities • Helps government improve health services • Came into force on April 7, 1948 • a date we now celebrate every year as World Health Day.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS or DHHS) • US agency for protecting health of Americans • Provides human services to those unable to help themselves • DHHS Medicare program is the nations largest health insurer • Medicare & Medicaid provide health care services to ¼ Americans

  4. National Institute of Health (NIH) • Nation’s medical research agency • Make medical discoveries that save lives • Largest source of funding for medical research in the world • Creates high-quality jobs by funding thousands of scientists in universities and research institutions in every state across America and around the globe

  5. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) • US federal agency under the DHHS based in Atlanta • Founded during WW2 • Protects public health and safety • Develop & apply disease control • Environmental health • Occupational health & safety • Health promotion • Injury prevention • Education

  6. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) • A federal agency • Responsible for regulating food and drug products sold to the public • Led by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, appointed by the President with help from the Senate

  7. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) • Establishes and enforces standards that protect workers from job-related injuries and illness

  8. Health Department • Part of government which focuses on issues related to the general health of the citizenry
