11. Refugees and Asylum-seekers An asylum-seeker is someone who has fled their home country and has asked the government in the country they have entered to recognise them as a refugee. Asylum-seekers must prove that they meet all aspects of the United Nations definition in order to be granted ‘Refugee Status’. A refugee is a person who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country”.

It is nearly always housing that other people do not want to live in. 2 Most asylum-seekers aren’t really fleeing from danger. Their countries are safe.
