  3. Why? ICM envisions a world where EVERY childbearing woman has access to Midwives Care ►Need to develop midwifery workforce globally ►Education is fundamental to the build and sustainable development of midwifery workforce (1st ICM Strategic Goal 2011-2014) Strengthening Midwifery Globally

  5. When? • ICM Glasgow Council command (2008) • Education Task Force worked for 2 years • Modified Delphi Technique and Reviews from experts • Approved by Durban Council 2011 • Tools approved by ICM Council 2012 Strengthening Midwifery Globally

Education Standards foster • Accountability of Curricula, trust • Ongoing Quality of education • Competent midwifery workforce • Safe & Quality care for women/families • Autonomy of profession & midwives • Continuing improvement in midwifery programs and practice. Curriculum Founding Principles • Post-Secondary education • At least 3 years direct entry education • At least 18 months post-nursing educ. • Congruent with ICM core documents • Preparation of fully qualified, competent midwives • Self-evaluation of personnel, procedures, outcomes Strengthening Midwifery Globally

Assessment Strategies • Supports valid and reliable assessments to measure students: Knowledge, behaviors, practice skills, critical thinking and decision making, interpersonal relations and communication skills. • Regular evaluations of the quality and effectiveness of curriculum, practical learning sites, and external program effectiveness. Glossary terms • Represent ICM glossary terms, agreed globally by Education, Research, and essential Competencies task forces • Advise to agree on the ICM glossary first; then the standards, and finally follow the companion guidelines to implement. • Continual evaluation of standards Strengthening Midwifery Globally
