Family Customs • Most live in urban areas, typically modern apartments. • They wear western clothing, saving traditional clothing for festivals and other ceremonial activities. • Confucian ethics are practiced (respect elders, practical wisdom is valued, proper conduct, honor family, strong work ethic) • Travel is a very popular family activity. • Many families in Taiwan enjoy singing together.

  5. Government • Multiparty Democratic Regime (government form not communist) • 5 Branches of Government • Taiwan is a province of China. • Keeps close eye on business and labor unions.

Economic Successes and failures • Rapid Industrial development and economic growth • Other countries’ outsourcing companies to Taiwan/China/India. • Homeless, gang, and teenage prostitution rates are high because Government trying to keep pace with growth.(Social programs lacking) • Real estate prices put homeownership out of reach for 20% of the population.

  7. Music • There are many subcultures in Taiwan that have their own form of music. The most notable are the Hakka and the Aborigines. • The Hakka is a form of Taiwanese opera. The Aboriginal music is Bunun, a type of polyphonic folk. • Pop and Rock are the most popular genres in Taiwan. There will typically be a guitar, drums and synthesized piano. A lot of times there will be other instruments native to Taiwan. Examples include the Zither, Bawu, and Zhu.

Elements of Music • Melody-Medium to large range, descending and ascending, disjunct and skipwise, climax in second verse of Melody. • Rhythm-Quadruple, simple. • Harmony-Consonant, pentatonic. • Form-Verse and Chorus, cadence at the end of each phrase. • Texture-Full, homophonic. • Expression-Lively, Mezzo-forte, tempo was moderate. • Timbre-The vocals were light and meaningful, the drums kept pace, added variety, the synthesizer was high pitched and vibrant, the guitar was electric and was strummed to the melody, did not deviate.
