  2. Today’s Passage • A Wicked Generation (vv.16-19) • A Perishing Generation (vv.20-24) • A Selective Revelation (vv.25-27) • A Gracious Invitation (vv.25-30)

  3. Context of the Passage • To receive a disciple is to receive Christ and to receive Christ is to receive the Father (10:40) • There is blessing for receiving a prophet and righteous man (10:41) • Jesus speaks well of John the Baptist (11:11-15) • Jesus applies the words of this passage to John the Baptist and Himself

  4. A Wicked Generation (vv.16-19) • In the analogy, people are compared to spoiled children who will not play regardless of the game proposed…they did not like what John (weeping, dirge) or Jesus (dance, flute) did • John and Jesus had the same message but a different style of ministry…both rejected! • The people had neither received John or Jesus, preferring their errors to truth and their wickedness to righteousness • Wisdom is proved right by her actions (see also Luke 7:35)

  5. A Wicked Generation (vv.16-19) “It is no different today, of course. God has many messengers with many varying gifts. Some are powerful speakers who can move a crowd to tears. Others are intellectual; they can make a careful case for Christianity and present many powerful proofs of the gospel….None of this matters to a generation of determined sinners who say in opposition, ‘This one is too loud. That one is too quite. This one is too intellectual…’”

  6. A Wicked Generation (vv.16-19) “…Don’t let this happen in your case. If you are rejecting Jesus Christ as your Savior, it is not because the gospel has not been taught…It is because you do not want to repent of your sin and trust Christ instead of clinging to your own faulty character and weak works…The only wise course is to abandon any attempts to save yourself and repent of your sin and commit yourself to Jesus.” James Montgomery Boice

  7. A Perishing Generation (vv.20-24) • Jesus denounced the unbelief of the cities in which He had done the most miracles due to unrepentance (v.20) • All of the miracles done in chapters 8-9 were done in these cities • Capernaum was Jesus’ headquarters. There was no record of anyone there threatening Him or throwing him out of town. Their sin was indifference!

A Perishing Generation (vv.20-24) • Five lessons about judgment • There will be a judgment to be feared • There are degrees of punishment • The worst sin of all is unbelief • Who are history’s greatest sinners? • No record of any notorious person from these cities • They were prideful (v.23, see Is. 14:13-15) • God’s judgments take account of His contingent knowledge • God does not owe salvation to everyone • If mercy were owed, it would not be mercy • The only thing God actually owes us is justice

A Selective Revelation (vv.25-27) • God hides the revelation of salvation from the “wise and prudent” and reveals it to “babes” (see Matt. 18:3-5) • Salvation revelation is given… • …by the Father according to His good pleasure (v.26) • …at the discretion of the Son (v.27) • …to those who are humble enough to look to Him for salvation (v.25)

  10. A Gracious Invitation (vv.28-30) • His invitation is… • …for everyone (v.28) • …to ungodly sinners (v.28) • …to those who are burdened by sin and desire freedom (v.28) • …to take His yoke and learn from/of Him (v.29) • …a double offering of rest for tired people (vv.28,29)

  11. A Gracious Invitation (vv.28-30) “Where discipleship is present, people are sensitive to sin and turn from it. They turn to Jesus, where relief from sin’s dreadful burden can be found…This is why times of great movement by God’s Spirit are also times of great repentance.” James Montgomery Boice

  12. Group Study • Share a time that either you or someone you know was closed-minded like the children who were not willing to play. How can we avoid stubbornness? • Why do you think the sins of unbelief and indifference are worse than murder, violence, and rape? • Do you think Christ would look at our country and say, “woe to you America”? Do you think America is currently under God’s judgment? • Why is humility so important? How can we become more humble? • In light of this study, how can we offer Christ’s rest to people?
