LETS TALK ABOUT COMPOSITION
THE ART OF COMPOSITION • Creating a visually compelling photo with proper composition, will grab the interest of the viewer. • This can be as simple or as complicated as you can imagine. • First of all, decide what your subject will be. • Consider one or several of these elements when composing your photo: • Rule of thirds…….use of light……cropping……..lines……..orientation….. • Depth of field……….balance……symmetry……..texture…….framing and more • But, remember “rules” are only guidelines.
Sometimes you can’t define how the composition changes an average photo into an exceptional one. A great composition is either there or it isn’t. Almost anyone – even a non-photographer recognizes a great composition. Let’s examine some images and try to identify what composition has made them exceptional.
Framingdraws the attention to the subject by blocking other parts of the image with something in the scene. This gives context to the photo, Imparts a sense of depth, Leads the eye to the subject, And, intrigues the viewer.
PERSPECTIVE – THE ANGLE YOU SHOOT FROM CAN AFFECT THE DRAMA OF A PHOTO. A SUBJECT CAN BE MADE DOMINANT BY SHOOTING FROM A LOW VIEWPOINT.
OR,CONVERSELY,A SUBJECT CAN APPEARSUBMISSIVE BY SHOOTING FROM A HIGH VIEWPOINT.
CROPPING CROPPING Refers to the removal of outer parts of The image to accentuate the subject. If you crop an image with your editing software, you will probably want to save the original image as well. Just give the cropped image a new name.
ORIENTATION IS ONE ELEMENT Vertical images can be very effective
RULE OF THIRDS Yes, we have talked about this composition element but we can’t emphasize it enough. Placing your subject off centre will often add more impact to your finished image. If you have a setting on your viewfinder for “rule of thirds” consider using it. If not, imagine your viewfinder is divided in a 3 by 3 grid. Then try placing your subject at one of the points where the lines intersect. Having said this, there are still many times when you will want your subject up front and centre.
WHAT MAKES THE FOLLOWING PHOTOS INTERESTING? THINK ABOUT ALL OF THE COMPOSITION ELEMENTS WHILE VIEWING THESE PHOTOS.…..
light, framing, depth of field RULE OF THIRDS, ORIENTATION, LINES
BALANCE, SYMETRY, TEXTURE, And…BREAKING THE RULE OF THIRDS…
Note: The horizon is placed on applied “rule of thirds” line
LIGHT, CROPPING. AND DEPTH OF FIELD
IS THIS A GOOD PHOTO? THINKING ABOUT COMPOSITION.. WHY?
THIS PHOTO IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF ADJUSTING DEPTH OF FIELD TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ART AND WHAT ABOUT THE COLOURS?
DEFINITELY ORIENTATION, AND LINES
SOMETHING IN THE FOREGROUND MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE, AND DEPTH OF FIELD
GREAT PHOTO…. WHY??
WOULD BE BETTER WITH SMARTER USE OF RULE OF THIRDS AND DEPTH OF FIELD
YOU WILL NOTE I HARDLY INCLUDED ANY “PEOPLE” PHOTOS IN THIS LESSON. • COMPOSING PEOPLE PHOTOS IS A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED AND, WE DID DISCUSS THIS PREVIOUSLY.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES • THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED PHOTOGRAPHERS RECOGNIZE THEIR • MISTAKES AND LEARN FROM THEM. • THE NEXT TIME YOU MESS UP A PHOTO AND YOU FEEL FRUSTRATED, • WALK AROUND FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOU LEARNED • TO ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING IN THE PAST. • BY PRACTICE AND DETERMINATION! • SO, FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR PHOTO, AND TRY AGAIN! • THE END
