BLOOD PRESSURE • Normal BP = 120/80 mmHg (In Adults) Systolic = 100-140 mmHg Diastolic = 60-90 mmHg Measuring Device Stethoscope Sphygmomanometer
PRECAUTIONS WHILE TAKING BLOOD PRESSURE • Cuff size – 12 × 24cms for adults [Cuff size is big for obese person and small for children]. • Apply cuff 4cms above elbow joint. • Keep manometer at the level of heart. • Subject should be comfortable. • If subject coming after walking, should take rest for 5 – 10mins.
Electronic measuring devices • Electronic blood pressure measuring devices are been used now regularly and the mercury is being phased out because of its hazardous nature. Most of these are now accurate enough for routine clinical use and are relatively inexpensive.
The pulse • The pulse is a wave of distension felt in an artery wall due to the contraction of the left ventricle. • The pulse of a healthy man may be around 72 beats per minute. • The point where the radial artery surfaces at the wrist, the radial pulse, is routinely used to take a pulse measurement, but there are several other clinically important arterial pulse points. • The number of pulse beats per minute normally represents the heart rate and varies considerably in different people and in the same person at different times. • The pulse indicate the rate at which the heart is beating the regularity with which the heart beats occur, i.e. the length of time between beats should be the same the volume or strength of the beat.
