DIDACTIC UNIT ON THE LITURGICAL SEASONS OF THE CHURCH’S YEAR • Group:2º Grade in the Secondary School • Age:Between 13-16 years old • Context:A private catholic School where most of the students are Christians and all offer religion as an obligatory subject.
OBJECTIVES • Teaching objetives: • To present the different calendars that are in use in the world • Show that each group o religion has o has had a calendar • To proof that the calendar we use is of Christian origin • Motivate students to research into the meaning of the different feasts of the church according to the faith • Relate the religious celebrations to their civil counterparts • Learning Objectives • By the end of the Unite the students should be able to: • Differentiate between the Muslim and the Christian calendar • Explain the origin of our actual calendar • Make a personal calendar from the day of your birth • Explain what is the liturgical calendar • Explain the main ideas behind ever one of the feast celebrated in the liturgical calendar
Development of basic competences • Most of the basic competences have been addressed in throughout the project. Some of the competences treated include: • -Environmental Knowledge competence: Students in this unit will acquire some basic ideas about some places of religious importance and the need to preserve them as national and human patrimonies. • - Cultural and Artistic competence: Students are provided with the knowledge of traditional and modern religious practices that have become part of our culture and art: songs, paintings, cinema, concerts and games. Also they learn about Spanish life, customs, building, food that are related to different religious celebrations. • - Social competence and good citizenship: they learn how Christmas is celebrated in different cultures, how religious beliefs are different and above that it is good to respect everyone no matter their religious belief our practice. Digital competence: They make use of varied websites, and use the Internet to search for different information related to a topic. They make a Power point and make a presentation using different ICT formats. • - Linguistic and communication:promote reading and the use of the English language to communicate in the classrooms, working in groups, taking notes and preparing written presentations. • - Competence in autonomy and personal initiative: prepare songs or power point presentations. The interaction with others, finding out how religious feast are celebrated in other cultures demands from the students’ personal initiative and some degree of autonomy and self confidence.

1. The advent Season • (Presentation with a story boozy) • Advent is the period of 40 day before Christmas in which Christians prepare for the Barth of Jesus Christ. It four weeks and four Sundays with special messages and moments for each week • The Christmas Wreath • The four colour candles and their meanings • prepare a Christmas greeting card • singAdventsongs
CHRISTMAS SEASON • (Edit a Christmas video with movie maker) • Christmas begins with the Christmas day itself when Christ was born and runs for three weeks until the Baptism of Christ. Important moments include: • The nativity • Holy innocents • The three magi • The flight to Egypt • The Baptism of our Lord • Sing a christmas Carol
THE LENTEN SEASON • (Mount a Power Point with the important moments of this season): • This is the period of forty days during which Christians prepare for Easter. Easter is the most important event and celebration in the Christian life, the death and resurrection of Christ. The most important days of this time are: • Ash Wednesday • Holy Thursday • Good Friday • Holy Saturday • And Easter Sunday or the resurrection of the Lord

THE ORDINARY SEASON • The ordinary Season: (Activities and games from Smart book 10). • The time in between one important season and another is called ordinary time. That is, time without any special occasion for feasting but when a normal Christian life which is always a feast in the Lord who saves in the ordinary life is encouraged.
