Expect the unexpected. • Irony Is whenever you expect something and the opposite happens. • These things are what you’ve been brought to assuming whenever you see or hear certain things. • These things are used as worldwide symbols to express certain emotions and feelings. • “his enemies. Two doctors”(Foster241). Your used to doctors being heroines.
Symbols used in irony • What are some of the symbols. Its actually not as complicated as it may seem. • Symbols are things such as rain sunshine and Christ figures. • Things get tricky whenever you begin to associate certain things habitually and those things are switched around. that is irony. • “if you read a scene in which new life was coming into being, the rain outside would almost inevitably lead you(based on your previous reading) to a process of association…”(Foster237).
How irony is used. • Normally characters are “our equals or even superiors”(Foster236). • They go against what is normally thought of as inside the box. • For example a terrible guy in a story. He could very well be a hero. But you may never realize till the end when the secrets of his ways are revealed.
Lets get technical! • Now for the technical side • In irony you have the sign. • “the sign is something that signifies something”(Foster 238). • The thing that is doing the signifying is the signifier. • And the message that is being signified is .. Well the signified. • The signifier its self can be quite stable but does not have to be used in a stable or orthodox way.
Jazz? • Irony does in fact have a lot in common with jazz. • Just as with jazz you “begin by laying out a melody which is the basis for every thing that will happen”(Foster239). • Just as with irony they lay the basis for what will happen making it that much for effective.
All in AllIrony trumps everything • All in all “irony trumps everything”(Foster236). • Irony doesn’t work for everyone because it very writer specific. • “every other chapter in this book goes out the door when irony comes in the door”(Foster244). • Irony is what gives books its wonder. • Irony is the same concept in most books but different in so many • Its almost..ironic.
HTRLLAP:GE • The irony in Charles Dickens Great expectations isthat usually your used to a fairy tale ending, but not this time. • Through all of pips struggles and sacrifices he still doesn’t seem to be happy. • when he “ knew no peace or rest”(Dickens 212). • He was never quite satisfied.
HTRLLAP: in real life • To me it reflects in magazines. • How can the same magazine with body peace articles telling you to love who you are, are the same magazines trying to conform you into being this ideal person. • One page will be a treaty for body peace. Which is great and I support it. • What I don’t support is how a few pages later it will say how to make a petite figure look curvy and a curvy figure leaner.
