  1. HISTORY REVISION Today: Practice questions for the source paper on Russia in 1917 Edit your lovely films

  2. “Lenin was telling the Bolsheviks to prepare for a second revolution, an idea which came as a great shock to many since they did not think the time was yet right to launch a coup. However, Lenin’s appeals for ‘Peace, Bread, Land’ and ‘All power to the Soviets’ proved popular slogans with the Russian people” -From a modern history textbook Question 1b)Using the source and your own knowledge, explain why people were attracted to Lenin in April 1917 (4)

  3. A photograph of government troops firing on anti-government protestors in July 1917 Question 1c) – How far does the source support the view that the Provisional Government was losing control in 1917? (5)

  4. 1 – 2 Marks: Generalised answer; copies or paraphrases; uses content of source only [1-2] E.g: The source says that people liked his ideas of “peace, bread and land” and they were attracted to the slogans • 3-4 Marks: Clear explanation of the content with an attempt to provide some context. [3-4] Needs explanation and background knowledge for highest mark E.g: The source shows that people were increasingly dissatisfied with the situation in Russia, especially the continuation of WWI and as a result the people were hungry and they wanted the land shared fairly – many were already seizing land in the countryside. Workers in the cities liked the idea of the Soviets taking control. Lenin promised these things in his April Thesis shown in the Source. Peer assess – Question 1b)

  5. 1-2 Marks Generalised answer; uses content of source mainly e.g. the source shows troops firing on protestors who are running riot in Petrograd 3-4 Marks Discusses content of source with an attempt at a judgement on the set question e.g. The source confirms the view that the government had lost control – this is shown by the people running riot in the streets and the fact that the troops have resorted to firing on them 5 Marks Answer addresses the issue clearly, using the source and contextual knowledge to offer a reasoned judgement. e.g. The source does confirm that the Provisional Government were losing control (eg as above), and in July 1917 there were a wave of protests led by the Bolsheviks known as the July Days. These were mainly anti-war and showed the dislike of the government – however, they did restore control at this time and in fact arrested many leading Bolsheviks. This also only shows the unrest in the cities. Peer assess – Question 1c)
