Cleaning your Clothes • Gather all dirty clothing • Sort the clothes • According to: colour (fastness), type of fabric, washing methods • Do up zippers, buckles, velcro, and empty pockets • Pre-treat stains • Never put a stained article of clothing in the dryer – it will bake it in! • Select a washing method • Variation in water amount and temperature, agitation speed • Select the water temperature • Hot water will help sanitize clothing • Dispense laundry products • Dry the clothes • Dryer or air-dry (flat or hung up)
Hand Washing Clothes THINGS TO CONSIDER IN HANDWASHING CLOTHING: • Use a sink or container large enough for clothes to move freely. • Choose a soap or detergent appropriate for the type of fabric.
Steps to Hand Washing • Fill sink with water at the temperature appropriate for the type of garment fabric. • Add detergent to the water and mix. • Add garment to the water-detergent mixture. • Soak for 5-20 minutes (depends on the type of fabric & garment). • Gently squeeze excess water from the garment. • Drain the sink and add fresh water. • Gently squeeze garment to push sudsy water through garment. • Rinsegarment at least twice.

Answers • Small scissors – to clip threads and trim • Shears – to cut fabric • Seam ripper – to cut and remove stitches • Sewing gauge – a small ruler with a slide marker is used for measuring a specific area (i.e. width of a seam or hem) • Tape measure – a narrow strip of durable plastic with inches and centimetres to measure fabric
