2 0 0 0 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • Process: • Required under s. 10 of POEA Act 1991 • Changed from 2 years to 3 years since 1997 • Inaugural SoE Advisory Council established to oversee development of the Report • Presented to the Minister and tabled in both Houses of Parliament
2 0 0 1 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • SoE Advisory Council: • 5 independent scientific experts (one for each main SoE theme) • 3 stakeholder representatives: local govt, community & industry • 1 govt representative and a chair nominated by the independent EPA Board • Role was: to oversee the preparation;advise on the use of indicators reported; comment on draft material; promote and review SoE products
2 0 0 1 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • Approach taken for SoE reporting: • OECD - pressure / condition / response model still used for reporting purposes • Format modified to produce the SoE Report plus 5 stand-alone SoE Backgrounder documents (print & electronic versions) • Number of core environmental indicators reported expanded from 26 in (1997) to 61 in 2000 • Alignment of NSW indicators to those approved by Australian & NZ Environment & Conservation Council in December 1999
2 0 0 1 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • Supporting SoE - SoEdirect: • Each year the NSW EPA has provided EPA data for use in council SoE Reports • Since 1999 this information has been distributed electronically via SoEdirect on the EPA homepage & now CANRI • While SoEdirect commenced prior to CANRI it has been developed to be compatible with CANRI and other env reporting tools such as: • the NSW Natural Resources Atlas; the NSW node of the Australian Coastal Atlas; and other CANRI environmental information tools
2 0 0 1 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • Indicator frameworks available: • ANZECC core environmental indicators (75) • NSW SoE core environmental indicators (61) • Indicators developed for local council & regional SoE reporting in NSW • Corporate & Public Environmental Reporting eg. Sydney Catchment & Sydney Water • Headline Sustainability Indicator framework being developed by ANZECC • Global Reporting Initiative (& international) • OECD including Environmental Performance Reviews

2 0 0 1 CANRI / AURISA Workshop: Sharing Natural Resources Information • Future opportunities: • Closer alignment between SoE reporting at local / regional, state and national levels • Greater consistency in indicators reported • Review and refine data collection and data presentation on these indicators • Development of templates and data sharing between local, state and commonwealth governments and corporate sectors • Trial project underway between LG and the EPA to fill data gaps • More dynamic use of ‘live’ links to data • Trends towards Sustainability Reporting and sustainability indicator frameworks
