  3. Objective Students will: • Identify successful reading strategies that are helpful for reading. • Build on their existing set of strategies with national strategies.   •  Compile a new 8th Grade set of reading strategies for a successful academic year.

  4. Vocabulary STRATEGY • A plan of action designed to achieve an overall aim. • A way to overcome a major problem.

Top U.S. Reading Strategies • Get the meaning of words and phrases that you don’t know by using the source materials, or just use the materials you have that have already used the words and phrases. • Before you read, preview your reading to get a hint of what you’re about to read and then make predictions. • Relate what you are reading to other sources you know and have read before because building connections helps keep it fresh. • Create a graphic organizers, outlines, drawing, or any other visual help while reading to keep the story in check. • Continuously check and clarify for understanding with a reading buddy or reading clubs (on or off-line).   • Read age-appropriate material with fluency and accuracy, but build your skills by reading challenging materials.   • Use any information you gather to explain and support questions and predictions about what you are reading. • Interpret what you read using story elements, different points of view, and personal themes. • Compare, contrast, and think about ideas and information from various sources that relate to your reading to build your opinions. • Summarize what you have read in your own words using general details that relate to what you are reading. • Take note on how the reading and illustrations influence how you read when the author uses foreshadowing, flash­backs, colors, strong words and language, action, and tempo. • Carefully look at tables that display information and data and other in visual ways to show important information.

  8. Reflection Write yourself an email response for today's AIM using: -  details from our discussion. -  ideas from your DO NOW. -  examples from real life experiences. -  blunt, brutally honest opinions from you.

  9. Task: 1)  Take out your reading book. 2)  Choose one, or more, reading strategy from your notes. 3)  At the 10 minutes mark, think about how the reading strategies helped or didn't help you today.  

  10. HOMEWORK Write a one page (five or more sentences) response on how reading strategies helped or didn't help you in reading class today.  Use details and/or experiences in your response.   2 Points:  One page complete response. 1 Point:  Half page or partially complete response. 0 Points:  One sentence answer or lack of a response using details or experiences.
