  8. Facts about Croatia • Population (2001.): 4,5 millions • Capital: Zagreb (800.000 inhabitants) • 4 regions: Slavonia, Dalmatia, Istria and Zagreb county • GDP: 28,2 bn USD (2003) • GDP per capita: 6609 USD (2003) • Candidate country to EU (Accession negotiations between the EU and Croatia were opened on October 3, 2005) 3/15

  9. Basic indicators of Croatian economy • Industrial production (%): 4,1 • Inflation rate (%): 1.8 • Unemployment rate (%): 19,5 • Exports, mil USD: 6.164 • Imports, mil USD: 14.199 • Croatian National Bank foreign exchange rate reserves, mil USD: 8.191 • Industrial country (Pharmaceutical industry – PLIVA, BELUPO etc), Electro-industry (KONČAR, TESLA-ERICKSON, HT etc), Mechanical engineering industry (ĐURO ĐAKOVIĆ, ALSTOM etc), Shipbuilding (3.maj, Uljanik etc), Civil engineering (f.i. finished Zagreb-Split highway in this year) and others • Agriculture (Slavonia) • Tourism (over 6 bn USD turnover in this year!) 4/15

  10. Scientific potential of Croatia • 6500 Doctors of Philosophy and 3000 Masters of science • Only 1,43% of GDP for science and education, whereas only 0,3% present investments from the Croatian companies. • Six Universities: Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka, Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik and a lot of mainly state institutes, the biggest and most known is Ruđer Bošković Institute. Building of Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Slavonski Brod 5/15

  11. Centres for data and document conservation • Mechanical and physical testing centres are located mainly at the universities (4 mechanical and 4 civil engineering faculties • (Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Osijek, Slavonski Brod etc), at the Institutes (RBI,Civil engineering institute etc) and in the companies as well. • the collaboration between the institutions in data and documents exchanging within the state and abroad is in the rule very few. • the first attempt to do something in this sense is the forming of the database MAT-NET by Faculty of mechanical engineering and naval architecture (FSB) in Zagreb. 6/15

  12. MAT-NET database consists:- catalogue of all Croatian institutions dealing with materials - new books, papers, texts - info service (conferences, workshops, seminars, events related to the materials matter)- advertising of companies- news from the field http://www.mat-net.hr 7/15

  17. Data management and dissemination in nuclear safety • Croatia and Slovenia have common nuclear power plant Krško, situated in Slovenia near border with Croatia. In project ‘Application of fracture mechanics by revitalisation of energetic components’ participate the researchers from Ljubljana, Zagreb, Maribor and Slavonski Brod. The aim of the project is to define the procedure for structural integrity assessment (based on SINTAP) and the life cycle estimation of some vital part of the power plant. 9/15

  18. Some results achieved at the project devoted to the fracture mechanics application: • Experimental determination of the critical value of LEFM and EPFM parameters (KIC, CTOD, CMOD, J-integral) for homogeneous and heterogeneous cracked components (f. i. welded and adhesive joints) F d5 C M B O D SCHENCK test machine for static and dynamic testing 1000 kN (Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Slavonski Brod) 4W B = 2 W 10/15

  19. Modelling and numerical calculation of fracture toughness parameters by finite element (FE) analysis, stress and strain distributions, structural optimisation etc. • CDF and FAD determination and critical crack value estimation • Life cycle estimation of some components by using of SINTAP procedure Stress field by T-joint of pipes 11/15 Equivalent stress distribution by spherical pressure vessel

  20. Recent investigations: Bilateral Croatian-Hungarian project 'New approach to design of welded components based on benefits of present heterogeneity in the weld joint' together with Báy Zsoltan Institute for Logistics and Production Systems - Miskolc, prof. László Tóth. UM W BM a H OM a/W=0,5 H=W/24 H=W/16 H=W/8 H=W/4 H=W/2 seq≥ sYW OM seq≥ sYB seq≥ sYW UM 12/15

  21. Recent investigations: The results of the project‘Object grating method application in strain determination on CTOD test' will be published in the International Journal for Strain in May 2006. The fracture behaviour is described by measuring deformation on surface of specimen in term of CTOD and consenquently by strain determination. Strain (von Mises) distribution at the crack tip at different load of specimen 13/15

  22. Instead conclusions • Most of the laboratories in Croatia are not accredited according to the EN 17025 and therefore obtained results could not be fully accepted. • Experimental data for different materials, coatings and joints as the result of investigations performed by companies, especially in the case of nuclear power plants are in the rule confidential and not public. • Dissemination of public data and documents for projects supported by Ministry of Science, Education and Sport of Republic of Croatia concerning the mechanical and physical testing of materials are highly released for public access. Most of data could be found using the Internet searching the database with projects reports (http://bib.irb.hr). • There is no official online data and information network in Croatia, but some efforts have been done with the MAT-NET database funding, where each institution (university, company, institute) could be registered and researchers can access the newest information from the field (conferences, original papers, popular texts etc), but there is no possibility to entry some experimental data. 14/15

  23. Therefore, Croatian universities and R&D organisations are really interested in to learn how to use web-enabled databases and they would become the part of the created network. • We would be very honoured if we could be invited to join JRC in some of the new project proposals to EU framework programmes with the topics of managing engineering data. 15/15
