AFTER BEFORE
Project Overview • $10.7 million renovation of 1968 building • Extensive interior and exterior enhancements and landscaping • New dining venues, student seminar rooms, a dining outdoor deck, office for Residence Life GUIDE, and gathering and study spaces • Pursuing LEED Gold Commercial Interior certification with sustainability features including solar tubes, reclaimed materials, and low emitting materials throughout the building • Academic partners use seminar rooms for courses and Conference Services will use spaces in the summer
Academic Initiatives and Student Engagement • Community, dining, and student programming space • New meeting rooms and lounges for small study groups • Flexible larger spaces for residence hall programming • Classes including Key program, College of Natural Sciences, Student Affairs in Higher Education, and Health and Exercise Science held in seminar and meeting rooms • Dedicated office space for GUIDE (Gaining Understanding through Involvement, Diversity, and Education)
Dining Center Features • Distinct stations featuring a wide variety of menu choices including a fresh salad bar, made-to-order deli, noodle and pasta venue, pizza and international food station, homestyle station and grill, and our famous Bakeshop desserts • Durrell Express with to-go options including sushi and gelato • Unique seating arrangements and an outdoor dining deck to offer views of the foothills
Positive Impacts • Space is bright and active; old space was dark and dreary and rarely used by students • More flexible spaces allow for significant increase of utilization; academic partners and meetings take place during the day and programming takes place in the evening • Dining has increased up to 100% from the old dining center which still had cafeteria-style serving lines • New Durrell Center will provide additional programming and dining space for Laurel Village, opening in Fall 2014 with 600 beds
