Composition:The Arrangement of Elements • Principles of Design • Points of View • Rule of Thirds
Principles of Design • Repetition and Pattern • Movement (Leading Lines) • Rhythm • Balance (there are three) • Variety • Emphasis • Proportion • Harmony and Unity • Contrast
Repetition and Pattern • Repetition: Use of line, shape, color, texture or motif in more then one place. • Pattern: more organized and formal version of repetition.
Movement A visual suggestion of action created by the placement of elements in a work of art. It may also be the path a viewer’s eye follows in a composition (leading lines).
Rhythm Repetition of similar elements such as color, line and shape. It is a smooth (or abrupt) transition from one element to another.
Variety The combining of one or more elements to focus on the diversities within a work.
Emphasis Used by artists to place special importance on an element, subject, or aspect of the work. Making an area stand out.
Proportion The relationship in size of one subject to another, and to the whole. The bigger the object, the more important it appears.
Harmony and Unity Harmony The combining of elements to accentuate their similarities. Unity Arrangement of elements to create a feeling of completeness and wholeness.
Contrast Shows differences between the elements in a distinctive way. This could be achieved by using color, size, or texture.
