Convex Mirrors (Diverging Mirrors)How to locate an Image using Ray Diagrams *Notice in a convex mirror the focus is still Found on the concave side. Step 1: Do not extend this line past the mirror.
STEP 2:. Note we are following the same rules for A convex mirror as for a concave. Only the circumstances are different.
STEP 3 • S ? • A ? • L ? • T ?
S = • A = • L = • T = Again as the bottom of the object was on the p.a. then the bottom of the image is as well. If not the above process would have to be repeated from the bottom of the object.
Homework • 1. Do ray diagram work sheets. • 2. page 501 6, 7 , 10 a) b) c) state 3 uses for concave mirrors.
Applications of Curved mirrors • CONCAVE MIRRORS: Headlights flashlights Satellite Dish telescopes
2` Spotlights: The bulb is inside the focus so the rays diverge slightly. search lights (the bulb is at the focus the incident rays reflect off the mirror as parallel rays.
Shaving mirrors and makeup mirrors are very flat concave mirrors so the object (your face) is inside the focus so the image is large and upright.
Solar cooker:The food is at the focus Solar water heater: the pipe of water is at the focus. The water will boil.
Convex Mirrors Security mirrors: have smaller virtual images, but can reflect a wide area. Convex mirrors are good for viewing hidden corners and in parking garages.
Side mirrors on cars: Caution objects are closer than they appear. This really means the virtual image is smaller than the object so appears closer.
