Forthcoming: winter 2010 www.csid.unt.edu/research/HOI
The Handbook is a project of the • Center for the Study of Interdisciplinarity (CSID) • at North Texas • Interdisciplinary centers for the study of a given issue are common, but no few Centers engage in research on interdisciplinarity in itself. • CSID seeks to • provide resources and networking for researchers and students interested in interdisciplinary research and education; • promote experiments in inter- and transdisciplinarity • identify institutional barriers to interdisciplinarity • establish indicators for the success of interdisciplinary projects
Definitions Multidisciplinarity: juxtaposes disciplines. Fosters wider knowledge, information, and methods. Disciplines remain separate, disciplinary elements retain their original identity, and the existing structure of knowledge is not questioned. Interdisciplinarity: a field of study that crosses traditional boundaries between academic disciplines, which integrates these different approaches or methods Methodological ID: borrowing a method or concept from another discipline in order to test a hypothesis, to answer a research question, or to help develop a theory. Eg, neurophysiological measures in psychology. Theoretical ID: a more comprehensive general view and epistemological form. Eg, philosophy of science policy; biochemistry Bridge Building and Restructuring Transdisciplinarity: going beyond the academy; case-based or problem-based approaches
Toward a Philosophy of Interdisciplinarity • An Interdisciplinary Philosophy • A 21st theory of knowledge production/future of the university • The humanities as bridge between STEM disciplines and society • Interdisciplinarity and the limits of knowledge
