Tornadoes • Tornadoes are violently whirling winds, usually visible as a funnel-shaped vortex. • It extends down from storm clouds. • It happens because of severe thunderstorms. • They can occur anywhere, but mostly in the southern regions of the US. Tornado Alley • The Tornado Alley is the states where masses of tornadoes happen every year. • These states are: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. • This is where each spring, masses of air collide and form tornadoes. Table of Contents
Tropical Hurricanes • A tropical hurricane is a huge, rotating storm that forms over warm ocean water near the equator. • It happens because the wind over the ocean picks up water and spins out to the land. • These weather events occur in the ocean, by a coastal area, and then spins to land. • Tropical hurricanes occur often. Lake Effect Snowstorms • This is a heavy snowfall that is by a lake. • It is caused by special circumstances that involve cold air, winds, and warm water. • These storms are made in areas close to the Great Lakes. • These occur not to often. • They occur in the winter, when it is cold. Monsoons • A Monsoon is a great big movement of air. • It happens because cold air sinks producing high pressure and the warm air rises. • These happen near Central America and Australia • They occur very often • They occur during the season of summer Table of Contents
El Nino • This is an event that causes major flooding • It happens because a warm ocean current appears off of the west coast. • These happen near the west coast • It forms on some years, but not on others • These happen in December and can occur for 18 months. Table of Contents
