Part 1. What is Green Chemistry? • Green Chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce the use of hazardous substances. • It aims to develop industrial procedures that have minimal impact and use chemistry to help prevent pollution.
12 Principles of Green Chemistry 1. Prevent waste: have companies dispose of their waste properly. 2. Design safer chemicals: new, less hazardous pesticides. 3. Find safer ways to make synthetic products: finding safer oils and greases. 4. Maximise atom economy: convert the maximum quantity of reactants to products, with few side-products. 5. Use safer solvents: using non hazardous liquids, solids or gases. Avoid purifications when possible and minimize the use of auxiliary substances. 6. Use renewable reactants: avoid use of reactants, especially the ones from petroleum.
12 Principles of Green Chemistry 7. Maximise energy efficiency: avoid wasting energy such as heat and electricity during the process. 8. Avoid chemical derivatives: synthetic transformations that are more selective will eliminate or reduce the need for protecting groups. 9. Use catalysts whenever possible: by reducing the temperature, you can save energy and avoid unwanted side reactions. 10. Design biodegradable products: better for the environment and break down. 11. Use real-time analysis to prevent pollution: control the formation of hazardous substances. 12. Minimise the potential for accidents: choose reagents and solvents that minimize the potential for explosions or fires.
Part 2. Case Study.Cold Power. Front Loader. • A brief explanation of exactly how the company or organization used Green Chemistry.- Their intelligent formula is filled with readily biodegradable enzymes that offer an environmentally friendly answer to non renewable ingredients. • How Green Chemistry was used by the company or organization. (which of the 12 principles.) -2. Design safer chemicals: new, less hazardous pesticides. -10. Design biodegradable products: better for the environment and break down. • The benefits to the company and to the environment that arose from the Green Chemistry initiative. - They sell more of their products. - Are environmentally friendly so doesn’t harm humans or plants or animals.
