Introduction • Road Description • Jenin-Tubas Highway is a major road that connects the northern districts of Jenin and Tubas, with a length about 16 km. • The highway starts from Jenin City at JannatPark Intersection, Al-Kfair Village, AqqabaVillage and ending at the north of Tubas City. • The following Google Earth picture describes the study case of the highway. 1
Objectives • Geometric design using the AASHTO standards: • Horizontal alignment • Vertical alignment • Cross sections • 2. Providing the design details. • 3. Capacity analysis and determining the number of lanes. • 4. Pavement design. • 5. Traffic singing and marking using local standards. • 6. Bill of quantities 3
Traffic Studies • A traffic counting is conducted (At Al-Shuhadah Intersection Eastern Leg) 4
Design control and criteria • Functional classification A Rural principal Arterial Highway. • Design Vehicle WB-15 is chosen to be the design vehicle. • Design Speed Design speed is between 65 to 110 km/hr So, the design speed is chosen to be 80 Km/hr 6
Design control and criteria • Level of Service The appropriate LOS is C Therefore, the recommendation is four-lane highway, two lanes in each direction. 7
Pavement Design • Negative result then we don’t need to use sub base layer. • The main structure number , • SN = a1 D1+a2D2m2 • =0.44*5.5+0.13*4.5*0.9 = 2.95 • Depth of the pavement(D1) is 3 inch (8 cm) • Depth of the base course (D2) is 14 inch ( 35 cm); So use( 40 cm) 10
Highway Geometric • Design Criteria for Horizontal Curves • Super elevation It is assumed to be 10 % • Radius As design speed equal 80 km/hr the superelevation equal 10% Rmin = 210 m. • Design Criteria for Vertical Curves • Terrain the terrain is mountainous. • Grade max. grade = 7 %. 12
Highway Geometric • The cross section elements are designed based on AASHTO recommendations: • Lanes : 3.6 m for each • Shoulder: 3 m for each • Median: 2 m • Cross slopes: 2% (for traveled lanes) and 4% for shoulders. • Side slopes: 1:2 • Cross Section Details • Guard rails & Retaining walls • Ditches • Culverts 13
Intersection design There are several intersections in this highway. The three main intersections are: 1. Jannat Park intersection 2. Al-Zababda intersection 3. North Tubas intersection The intersections is designed according to AASHTO (2004) Standards. A Sample of intersection deign is shown: 15
BOQ and Cost 17
The full 30m right of way should be used to upgrade the number of lanes. • Four travel lanes are suggested (two in each direction). • The road needs continuous maintenance. • Drainage system should be improved . Recommendations 18
